A two-day national climate change conference focusing on the impacts of climate change on the Himalayan region has begun in Jomsom, Mustang. The conference, organized by Gharpajhong Rural Municipality, was inaugurated by Federal Minister for Agriculture, Forests and Environment Gita Chaudhary, who unveiled a balloon bearing a world map.
The conference is being attended by heads and chairpersons of 431 local governments and 41 District Coordination Committees from across the country, along with climate experts. Discussions are focusing on the melting of glaciers, the risk of glacial lake outbursts, changes in the snowline and treeline, drinking water and irrigation crises, and the impacts of climate change on agriculture, livestock farming and tourism.
The conference aims to develop a common strategy for reducing climate-related risks and strengthening adaptation measures. According to the organizers, the ‘Gharpajhong Climate Change Declaration 2083’ will be issued on Wednesday from the banks of the Kali Gandaki River.
